Welcome one and all to the Royal Capital of the Clover Kingdom, where mages and magic abound!

Here reside orphaned boys Asta and Yuno, who as infants were left at the same church in a remote village within the kingdom. Asta, as adventure-fantasy shonen anime goes, is the overeager and energetic protagonist who annoys everyone out with his yelling. A complete opposite comes to life in fellow orphan Yuno, the tall, handsome, brooding, but aloof “rival.” Constantly contrasting Asta and Yuno would grow up together like frenemies, an arc to polarize the show’s viewers more.

But in a kingdom where everyone uses some sort of magic, Yuno is considered a skilled user versus the incapable but physically strong Asta. This only sets up their rivalry further, as the two youths start on separate magic-filled adventures. The goal: To be the next Magic Emperor, the coveted title for the strongest mage in the land wielding military dominion. Whoever succeeds will be second to the Clover King himself.

Like most fantasy-adventures, Black Clover, at 170 episodes all in all, brims over with worldbuilding details that might make the series seem too complex. Case in point: Mana versus attributes. Mana is a form of energy derived from the four elements of nature (fire, water, earth, air). Meanwhile, an attribute is intrinsic to every mage, derived and developed from any of the elements. In the Clover Kingdom, the common mage can only possess one magic attribute.

There are scores of magic attributes in the Black Clover world, but here to help kick-start your binging are a few of the most prominent ones cast in the series!

Wind Magic

A li’l special mention here since Yuno is a user!

Wind Magic allows a mage to generate and manipulate, well, the wind. Useful when flying on brooms, Wind Magic can also be used a la Goku’s fluffy yellow kinton cloud on Dragon Ball. The Thief’s Wind Cloud spell gathers enough wind streams to support and transport a user—check out how awesome it looks on Episode 12!

WATER

For obvious reasons, Water Magic, which allows its user to create and control water, can resist Fire Magic. In a number of episodes, Noelle Silva beautifully exhibits defensive Water Magic while in her water armor called Valkyrie Dress. While wearing the armor, she can glide through air mimicking a water stream. Interestingly, the Valkyrie Dress has another variation called the Mermaid Form. The latter is ideal for underwater combat as it grants the user the ability to move swiftly special thanks to a fishtail.

FIRE, MERCURY, LIGHTNING

Let’s hit three birds with one stone here.

Firstly, Fire Magic grants its user fiery powers. And because of its destructive nature, Fire Magic is often used as an offensive spell. Yet, an interesting way it’s used in the series is through the Soothing Holy Light spell, which allows the user to manifest lit candles that’ll surround a wounded target for a much-needed healing. The spell can be used to treat more than one person, as seen in Episodes 31 and 32.

Fire Magic proves to be stronger than Mercury Magic, even if the latter comes from Water and Steel Magic (liquid metal).

Meanwhile, Mercury Magic, inspired by the silver-colored element, enables the user to form weapons among other things. The toxic nature of mercury is also applicable in this type of magic, as seen with the Silver Rain spell on Episode 22. Here, the Mercury Magic user is shown summoning catastrophic mercury droplets to trickle down from the sky!

Lastly, Lightning Magic lets its user generate and manipulate lightning—and in a sense, electricity. By its nature, this magical attribute grants the user ultra speed and offense. In a number of episodes, for example, a pair of Thunder God’s Boots (created from Lighting Magic) is shown to enhance its user’s physical abilities, speed, and power. It proves to be handy when chasing or escaping. It’s also dependable in combat, as a kick while wearing the boots will surely knock one out.

ANTI Magic

While initially powerless, Asta does possess Anti Magic, an energy that negates other forms of magic. He can use it against defensive spells, curses, and traps.

Whereas a person using magic depends on mana alone, our hero Asta doesn’t have to for Anti Magic. His weakness, he later transforms into his unique source of strength!

Anti Magic can also be used while wielding weapons like the Demon-Slayer Sword, the Demon-Dweller Sword, and the Demon-Destroyer Sword—all of which perform different magic-countering purposes.
