Motorola Moto G50 5G w/ Dimensity 700 Hands-on

Last week Motorola unveiled the Moto G50 5G, sporting a 6.5-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, triple-rear cameras, a 5,000mAh battery, and powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G chipset. Now it’s finally here in the Philippines, so read our initial thoughts below.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the Moto G50 5G is its size. It’s a pretty tall device at 167mm, chunky at 9.26mm and hefty at 206g. But that’s understandable given the large screen and big battery.

The body is made of plastic with a glossy back panel, but it feels sturdy and has a water-repellent design, meaning it can handle accidental spills, splashes, or light rain. It also feels good in the hands as the frame has flat sides. It looks nice, too, with its Meteorite Grey color that produces a bluish glow and light effects depending on the angle.

The 6.5-inch Max Vision screen features an HD+ (1600 x 720) resolution or equal to 269ppi. It’s not exactly hi-res, but it’s enough for most tasks including watching videos or playing games. Pixels are noticeable only if you really look up close.

Bezels are noticeable as well, especially the thick chin. There’s also a notch at the top for the 13MP selfie camera. Despite the low resolution and thick bezels, the screen is vibrant with decent viewing angles. It also has a 90Hz refresh rate for some smooth visuals.

Found on the right side of the device is the dedicated button for Google Assistant, volume buttons, and power/wake button that also doubles as a fingerprint scanner. The buttons are made of plastic but tactile, firm, and quiet. The buttons are easily reachable but the Smart Assistant button can be quite a reach.

Placed on the left side is the card tray for two nano-sized SIM cards and a microSD card in a hybrid setup.

Up top, we have the secondary microphone, while down below is the 3.5mm audio jack, main microphone, USB-C port, and loudspeaker.

Flip it on its back and you will see the triple-rear cameras consisting of a 48MP main, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth.

Powering the Moto G50 5G is a MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G SoC, Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, 5,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging, and Android 11. Check out the benchmark scores below:

• AnTuTu v9.1.1 – 296,657
• 3D Mark – 1,103 (Wild Life)
• PC Mark – 7,809 (Work 3.0)
• Geekbench 5 – 546 (Single-Core), 1,650 (Multi-Core)
• AndroBench – 945.22 MB/s (Seq. Read), 486.37 MB/s (Seq. Write)

The Moto G50 5G is priced at PHP 10,495 and looks like a nice offering for those looking for a budget-friendly smartphone with great daily-driver capabilities. Stay tuned for our full review.
