MANILA – The Philippines, Japan, and the United States are looking at the possibility of strengthening cooperation on various security issues.

This came following the inaugural Philippines-Japan-US Trilateral Defense Policy Dialogue (TDPD) last Sept. 13.

In a statement on Friday, Department of National Defense (DND) spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said the event was held via video teleconference.

Discussed during the TDPD were possible areas of cooperation in the fields of maritime security and maritime domain awareness, cyber security, information sharing, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

"The Philippines delegation was led by Ms. Marita I. Yoro, CESO III, Director of the Office for Strategic Assessments and International Affairs. The Japanese delegation was led by Mr. Miura Jun, Director General for International Affairs, Bureau of Defense Policy. The US delegation was led by Ms. Lindsey W. Ford, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense," he added.

Andolong said the representatives exchanged views on common defense and security challenges including maritime security challenges with an emphasis on the importance of upholding freedom of navigation and overflight and the rules-based order to ensure peace and stability in the region.

He added the first-ever TDPD between the three nations ended with an agreement of a regular meeting between the delegations. (PNA)
