MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – The Department of Education (DepEd) has appealed to parents to enroll their children this school year following decreases in enrollment.

DepEd recorded 349,962 enrollees in kindergarten to senior high school in the Ilocos Region as of August 23, which was much below from last year’s total enrollment of almost 1.3 million students.

“We hope we could surpass last school year’s enrollment as there had been (a) decrease in the enrollment in kindergarten, grade 1, and senior high school, although the enrollment is still ongoing,” said Darius Nieto, project development officer of DepEd Ilocos Region, in a virtual forum hosted by the agency on Wednesday.

Nieto said there are 52,742 enrollees in kindergarten, 133,347 in elementary, 93,963 in junior high school, and 69,910 in senior high school.

“We are pleading with the parents if possible to please enroll their children,” he said.

Nieto said DepEd-1 will continue implementing modular and blended learning for the school year 2021-2022.

Enrollment is still ongoing in the region along with Brigada Eskwela and then the Balik Eskwela, all in partnership with the barangay officials, the Parents and Teachers Associations, and other stakeholders.

Nieto is also urging graduates and those who are able to teach students how to read to volunteer for this year’s Brigada Pagbasa.

The Brigada Pagbasa is an after-school reading program that envisions bringing together education partners and experts to help learners read and be functionally literate. It is the highlight activity of this year’s Brigada Eskwela.

Nieto said health protocols will be strictly observed and volunteers will be required a negative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test result or if possible, be fully vaccinated against coronavirus disease 2019.
