LAOAG CITY – Drivers of public utility jeepneys (PUJs) and tricycles in Vintar, Ilocos Norte who are hard hit by the current implementation of hard lockdown have received cash aid from the municipal government.

As soon as he got hold of the PHP2,000 assistance on Wednesday, Cliff Lumabao, a trike driver from Barangay Parut, immediately went to the grocery store and bought the needs of his family.

“Thank you very much to the municipal government and to all our leaders for helping us. This helps us a lot to buy our needs,” he said, citing he could not go out to work due to some travel restrictions affecting public transport.

Since Tuesday (Aug. 17), the municipal government led by Mayor Larisa Foronda started to distribute the cash aid to 62 jeepney drivers and 362 tricycle drivers in the town.

Sourced from the local government fund, the town council has appropriated PHP848,000 to cover the relief assistance to the marginalized sector.

Just like in other towns of the province which are currently under localized enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) from August 16-31, the local government has clustered its 34 barangays into six clusters so that there will be no overcrowding in the public market.

Based on the guidelines, only one member of a family household is allowed to go out to buy their essential needs during their pre-scheduled market day.

During the localized ECQ, going to this capital city is only allowed every Tuesday for Vintar residents while Sunday is declared as a "no-movement day” in the city to allow all businesses and industries to disinfect.

Excluded in the “no-movement day” here are hospitals, drugstores, pharmacies, food preparation establishments for delivery, gasoline stations, and Business Process Outsourcing establishments. (PNA)
