DUMAGUETE CITY – The province of Negros Oriental on Thursday logged 61 new confirmed positive cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) with no deaths.

Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, Covid-19 incident commander of the province’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) in a virtual presser in the afternoon, said the results are from Aug. 18 and 19.

Also, 68 new recoveries were reported for the same period.

Dumaguete, the provincial capital, recorded the highest number of new cases at 20, followed by Guihulngan City with eight; Basay, Bayawan City, and Sibulan with five each; Bacong, Valencia, Tanjay City, three each; Sta. Catalina, Pamplona, and Mabinay, two each; Siaton, Bais City, and Bindoy, with one each.

For the first time in a long while, many towns and cities in Negros Oriental have not recorded a single Covid-19 case compared to the past several months, she said.

"The significant drop in the number of cases in Negros Oriental over the past several weeks since a surge of infections that warranted the imposition of stricter quarantine classifications is encouraging," Estacion said.

She reiterated that people must cooperate and continue adhering to basic health protocols and avoiding mass gatherings to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

As of Thursday, the total caseload in Negros Oriental is 10,884, broken down into 10,324 recoveries, 335 active positive cases, and 225 mortalities. (PNA)
