Zamboanga City cracks down on ‘colorum’ tricycles

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Local authorities have launched a crackdown to weed out colorum and illegal tricycle franchise holders operating in this southern port city.

Maj. Chester Natividad, City Traffic Enforcement Unit (CTEU) chief, said Thursday the move aims to check the franchise papers of tricycles plying city thoroughfares and protect both the riding public and legal tricycle franchise holders.

Natividad said drivers of intercepted tricycle units were asked to present papers and documentation proving their legitimacy as public conveyances, which includes the driver’s license, registration of the unit and tricycle franchise.

At least 97 units were flagged down and 14 were impounded as they were found to have documentary deficiencies, he added.

“The operation is not against the tricycle drivers. We launched the crackdown to check the franchise and the reported overcharging and refusal to convey passengers,” Natividad said.

The impounded tricycle units will be released once the owners comply with the requirements, he said.

Additional requirements include the printed fare matrix, franchise, and registered plate numbers on the sidecar visible to the passengers aside from the registration of the unit.

Natividad advised the riding public to be vigilant and not to ride on colorum tricycles as well as to report to the CTEU office, erring drivers.
