'Maring' threatens Babuyan Islands

Philippine News AgencyOctober 11, 2021

MANILA – Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Maring "endangers" Babuyan Islands, and will bring heavy rains across some parts of Luzon, the weather bureau said Monday afternoon.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said "Maring" was last tracked 105 kilometers east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, or 120 km. east southeast of Calayan, Cagayan.

It is moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour and packs maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center, and gustiness of up to 115 kph.

Damaging gale- to storm-force winds will continue to prevail in areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2: Batanes, Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of Isabela (Palanan, Divilacan, Maconacon, Ilagan City, Tumauini, Cabagan, San Pablo, Santa Maria, Santo Tomas, Delfin Albano, Quirino, Gamu, Roxas, Mallig, Quezon), Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.

TCWS No. 1 has been hoisted over the rest of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Ifugao, Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, the northern portion of Bataan (Samal, Morong, Dinalupihan, Abucay, Orani, Hermosa), the northern portion of Quezon (General Nakar, Infanta) including Polillo Islands, and Calaguas Islands.

These areas will experience strong winds.

Heavy to intense, with at times torrential rains are expected over Batanes, the northern portion of mainland Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Apayao, Abra, Mountain Province, and Benguet.

Likewise, moderate to heavy, with at times intense rains will be experienced over the rest of mainland Cagayan, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Ilocos Region. Light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Central Luzon and the rest of Cagayan Valley.

Flash floods and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas highly susceptible to these hazards.

In the next 24 hours, monsoon rains may be experienced over the Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro as "Maring" enhances the southwest monsoon.

Occasional gusts reaching strong to gale-force in strength are also possible over the island, coastal, and upland localities of the Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Camiguin, Zamboanga del Norte, and the rest of Luzon.

Gale warning is still in effect over the seaboards of Southern Luzon and the Visayas, and the western seaboard of Central Luzon that is not under the TCWS.

Rough to high seas will be experienced over the seaboards of areas where TCWS No. 2 and 1 have been hoisted. These sea conditions are risky for all types of sea vessels.

Moderate to rough seas will continue to prevail over the remaining seaboards of Luzon and the Visayas, and the northern, eastern, and western seaboards of Mindanao. These conditions are risky for those using small seacraft, PAGASA said. (PNA)
