Malaysia’s AirAsia is set to expand beyond its low-cost carrier business by launching its ride-hailing app in Bali as a test drive for the Indonesia market, practically joining the likes of Grab and Indonesia’s GoJek.

AirAsia Ride Regional CEO Lim Chiew Shan confirmed in a virtual press conference yesterday that after entering the rideshare business in Malaysia last year, the company plans to spread its wings in other Southeast Asia countries such as the Philippines and Singapore.

For Bali, AirAsia Ride plans to hit the road this coming November.

AirAsia Ride will focus on cars, the firm reportedly said, and will not adopt the motorcycle taxi scheme like its potential competitors.

In Malaysia, AirAsia’s ride-hailing app’s program is set to hire drivers as full-time employees with monthly paychecks and other incentives per October this year. Currently, there are 53,000 registered AirAsia Ride drivers in Malaysia, per the company’s data.

Liem stated that the scheme will also be applied by the company in other countries, including Indonesia, but some changes might be applied in order to comply with local regulations.
