Troops disarm 'powerful' IED in Maguindanao

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao – Patrolling government troops found an improvised explosive device (IED) aimed at state forces running after local terrorists in Ampatuan, Maguindanao, the Philippine Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID) here announced Tuesday.

Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, Army’s 6ID commander, said soldiers belonging to the 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion (1MIB) were conducting clearing operations when they discovered an IED made from 105mm projectile in Barangay Salman on Monday afternoon.

“I commend our soldiers for their alertness while in pursuit of the terrorists belonging to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in the province,” Uy told reporters here Tuesday.

Members of the military’s explosive ordnance disposal team immediately deactivated the IED.

Lt. Col. Cresencio Sanchez, Jr., 1MIB commander, said patrol bases and detachments in the area were immediately alerted for enemy sightings following the IED discovery along the road in Salman village.

He said an investigation is ongoing on how the IEDs managed to slip military and police checkpoints established in the area. (PNA)
