Mayor’s libel raps vs 6 journalists junked

January 10, 2021

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The prosecutor’s office in Isabela has dismissed the cyberlibel complaints filed by Tabuk Mayor Darwin Estrañero against six local journalists for lack of jurisdiction.

The prosecutor’s office said the charges should instead be filed before a court where the cybercrime or any of its element was committed, where the computer system used for the supposed online defamation is situated and where the damage caused to a person took place.

Estrañero, who filed the complaint in Isabela last year, said there is no cyber libel court in Kalinga, prompting him to file the charges in Isabela.

The respondents included Guru Press editor-in-chief Brent Martinez and publisher Ghumie Pinkihan.
