Influencer claps back at beauty queen Rabiya Mateo for criticizing Duterte

A pro-government influencer is now bearing the brunt of pageant fans’ criticisms after she lambasted beauty queen Rabiya Mateo today for criticizing President Rodrigo Duterte.

TikToker Jam Magno is annoyed that Mateo said in an interview that women are “as capable” as men to become leaders, which is clearly a factual statement. Mateo said this in reaction to Duterte’s misogynistic remark where he said that women are unfit for the presidency. Duterte was trying to discourage his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, from running for the highest post in the country (but some netizens think it was all just for show).

So from Magno’s point of view, Mateo has no right to air her opinion on the matter (but clearly Magno thinks that she has the right to call out the beauty queen). Magno claimed that she had trained women for beauty pageants, where she told them to refrain from making controversial statements similar to what Mateo had said.

“Need I remind you, madam, that you are a representative of the country to the Miss Universe pageant,”  Magno said in English and Filipino.

“In case nobody advised you, your opinion may matter, but…[similar to] the advice I have given to the girls [whom] I have trained before, is that before you make an opinion, think about the repercussions of that certain opinion,” Magno added.

“However, when your opinion[s] seek to divide more than unite, I am going to be your problem, madam,” Magno said.

Magno then launched into a tirade focusing on Mateo’s alleged lack of fashion sense. Most pageant queens in the country wear gowns and dresses created by leading fashion designers. They are also dressed up by top stylists.

“I’m no longer going to complain about your fashion sense, which I cannot understand. Before you comment on national issues, focus on what you’re wearing first because that’s what’s more important,” Magno said with condescension.

“Your arguments are too weak. I’m going to speak up because I have trained Ms. Philippines candidates who have competed in international pageants. I really liked you from the start but now, you’re just dry,” she added.

Magno did not name the beauty queens whom she had trained. It is also unclear if she is connected with any of the leading boot camps which train the top beauty queens in the Philippines.

Because of her attacks against Mateo, Magno is currently trending on Twitter, where her name has been mentioned almost 3,000 times. A Twitter user lambasted Magno and implied that her sense of style is far from being on point.

User @silence_isOver tweeted, “Jam Magno has the nerve to insult Rabiya Mateo’s fashion sense, but here she is wearing this kind of trash outfit with an ugly and annoying face.”

A person using the handle @_majc said that while Mateo uses “her platform to empower women,” Magno “uses Tiktok to defend a misogynist.”
