“Bloody” might just be an understatement to describe the trailer of MAPPA Studio’s Chainsaw Man released last June 27.

Shown during MAPPA Stage 2021, in time for the animation company’s 10th anniversary, the much-awaited teaser trailer ran for a gripping minute and 10 seconds. Everyone was a gangsta until a memory of a beach central to the plot flashes back and unveils the demon-human hybrid—the titular character Chainsaw Man!

As of writing, the trailer has reached over six million views via MAPPA’s YouTube channel and almost eight million views on the movie’s Twitter handle.

ICYDK: Chainsaw Man is a manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The setting: 1997, in a world where fears manifest into demons. The central character: Denji, a devil hunter dies after being double-crossed, only to be revived by merging with his canine-chainsaw hybrid pet, Pochita. After the incident, Denji gains superpowers and becomes the Chainsaw Man who is now out for revenge!

The Chainsaw Man manga has seen commercial success, so much so that it had over 11 million copies in circulation by June 2021.

But it's not all gore. Critics have been raving about it for its storytelling and dark humor. This year, the comic even won in the shounen category of the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award—the so-called Oscars of Japanese comics.
