In the rolling Marlboro Hills in Batanes, Kara David tastes dishes made from beef that are made more flavorful by turmeric, a favorite ingredient of the Ivatans. Their beef soup that is similar to bulalo has yellowish soup because of the turmeric. She also learns about an Ivatan preservation method where pork meat is stored in its own fat. Kara also discovers unusual dishes using plants including the core of a banana tree - all survival foods for people living in a province frequented by typhoons.
